On 6th September 2026 we handled a first birthday party at White Orchid Society, Gaur City 2, for Mr. & Mrs. Sharma's daughter. Princess theme decoration, balloon work, catering for both kids and adults, and a full slate of activities — a tattoo artist, a magician and a game anchor. It ran as an evening event, which shapes a first birthday more than most people expect.

A First Birthday Is Not a Kids' Party

The instinct is to plan a first birthday the way you'd plan a party for a five-year-old. It isn't the same job. The birthday child is one year old and will not participate in anything — the guests who actually need entertaining are the older children in the extended family and the friend circle, usually spanning two to eight years old. Plan for them and the evening works. Plan for the birthday child and you end up with a room full of bored kids.

The other difference is the parents. At a first birthday the family is hosting a large group of relatives, many of whom have travelled, and the day carries more weight than a routine birthday. That means the setup has to be finished and photograph-ready well before guests arrive, not still being adjusted as people walk in.

The Venue: White Orchid Society, Gaur City 2

White Orchid is a society clubhouse in Gaur City 2, Greater Noida West. Society venues bring a fixed access window and a shared load-in route, and a princess theme setup with a balloon backdrop is not a fast build — the backdrop, arches and props all have to go up in sequence, and none of it can be rushed at the end.

Gaur City is a belt we work in constantly, which means the practical side was known rather than guessed: lift access, parking for the load-in, and realistic timings for when the hall would actually be free. For an evening event in a society hall that's the difference between a calm handover and a scramble.

Princess Theme Decoration and Balloon Work

A princess theme is one of the most requested first birthday themes for a baby girl, and it is easy to do badly. The failure mode is a single balloon arch and a printed backdrop, which photographs thinly. What makes it read properly is depth — a pastel balloon backdrop behind the cake table, balloon pillars and arches framing the entry, and themed props positioned so the photo corner works from more than one angle.

For a one-year-old the practical constraint is the child herself. Anything at floor level near the cake table has to be safe for a baby who is crawling or newly walking, and the photo corner has to be built at a height that works when the child is being held rather than standing. Small things, but they decide whether the family gets usable photographs.

Activities: Tattoo Artist, Magician, Game Anchor

Three activities for a mixed-age group of children, and each covers a different gap in the evening. The tattoo artist works as a rolling activity — children drift over as they arrive, so it fills the awkward first half hour while guests are still coming in. The magician is a fixed-time set piece that gathers everyone in one place, which also buys the catering team a clean window. The game anchor runs the stretches in between and keeps the room from going flat between the show and the cake.

Sequencing these three matters more than the individual acts. Run the magician too early and the later part of the evening has nothing anchoring it; run the games during the show and you split the room.

The Catering: A Kids' Menu With Biryani for the Adults

The menu was built around what children will actually eat: pasta, pizza, veg burgers and French fries, with ice cream and a small selection of mocktails. Biryani was served alongside for the adults.

This split is the standard request at first birthdays in NCR, and the mistake vendors make is treating the adult side as an afterthought — a token dish while the real effort goes into the kids' counters. It doesn't work, because the adults are the majority of the room and they stay longer than the children do. Biryani holds quality across a long service window, which is exactly why it suits an evening function where guests arrive over a couple of hours.

On the kids' side, the counters that draw crowds are fries and pizza, and both suffer badly if they sit. Those have to be served in batches rather than laid out at the start.

What We'd Take Forward

The thing that made this event work was the activity sequencing rather than any single element. Three activities sounds like a lot for a first birthday, but with a wide age range among the child guests it was the right call — a magician alone would have left long dead stretches.
